Two jobs every morning: top up the feed, tip out the water
Feed raked onto the floor. A bowl full of shavings, or knocked over completely. Wild birds helping themselves while your hens wait. This kit puts both jobs on the wall: feed stays in the feeder, water stays clean, and the morning round gets a lot shorter. It is the kit for an established backyard flock, and more than 80,000 chicken keepers have made the switch.
What is in the kit?
An 8 lb Large Chicken Feeder, a 1 gallon waterer with two Lubing cups with an upgraded float in each cup, and a mounting kit for each unit: steel brackets and screws for wood or metal. Nothing else to buy if you are mounting to wood.
Mounting to wire mesh? Contact us about the wire mesh mounting kit (sold separately) before you order.
What size flock is this kit for?
The 8 lb feeder suits 6–8 hens and holds about 8 lb (3.7 kg) of feed: about 5–7 days for a typical backyard flock on quality complete pellets. For the 1 gallon waterer, allow a pint (500 ml) per hen a day: about 4 days for 2 hens, and with 8 hens check it daily; a hen can drink up to a quart in hot weather. Two cups means two birds drink at the same moment, and the twin cup waterer comfortably waters 6-8 hens and will service up to 12. Breed, weather and free-ranging all move these figures, so check the feeder and waterer regularly.
Smaller flock or a lower coop? The 6 lb feeder and twin cup kit is the compact pair. Prefer one cup? The 8 lb feeder and single cup kit is the same feeder with a single cup waterer.
How does the feeder keep feed off the ground?
Feed gravity-feeds into a hooded base. The hood gives your hens room to eat comfortably, but the shape stops the flicking and raking that scatters feed across the floor, and a built-in rain hood channels water away from the opening so the feed stays dry outdoors. No moving parts, no treadle, no training. Your chickens start eating within minutes. Less feed on the ground also means less on offer for wild birds and rodents.
How does the waterer keep water clean?
Water sits in a sealed 1 gallon tank and only reaches the birds through the Lubing cups, which refill themselves as the level drops. No open bowl collecting shavings, dirt or droppings, nothing standing on the ground to be tipped over, and the tank blocks out UV to reduce algae and mold growth. Rinse the cups when you refill, rinse them under warm running water weekly, and give them a full clean every few months.
What feed should I use with this kit?
Quality complete feed, crumble or pellets. These give your hens balanced nutrition in every bite and reduce selective eating. Grain mixes let hens pick out their favorites and leave the rest, which is both waste and a nutrition gap.
If the feed level looks low in the tray, that is by design: it keeps feed away from the edges so it cannot be flicked out. Try the finger test: push your finger into the opening. If you can move the feed, your chickens can reach it.
How is it built, and how is it backed?
Every component except the German-made Lubing cups is injection molded in Brisbane and assembled by hand in Townsville, a genuine Australian made product. UV-treated ASA plastic handles sun and rain year after year, and with no moving parts there is nothing to jam or seize. Dine-A-Chook started in 2009 as a weekend project in the garage, and we are still a family business. Backed by a 3-year warranty on the feeder and the waterer components we manufacture, and 12 months on the Lubing cups. Color loss and fading, and rodent damage, are not covered. Full terms on our warranty page. Shipping to the USA is free, with import duties prepaid.
