The 1 gallon waterer for a small flock
A gallon of water in a sealed, wall-mounted reservoir, and one Lubing cup on the front. Each cup holds a little clean water and refills itself as the birds drink, and the rest of the supply stays shut away from feet, droppings and sunlight. It holds the same gallon as the twin-cup version, for a pen where birds come to drink one at a time.
How long a gallon lasts
An average hen drinks around a pint (500 ml) a day, and up to a quart in hot weather; how much a hen drinks depends on breed, diet, weather and other factors. Allow a pint (500 ml) of water per bird per day: for 2 hens a full gallon lasts approximately 4 days, and with 8 hens it will need checking daily. Check your waterer regularly.
Gallons and cups are two different things
The gallons decide how often you refill it. The cups decide how many birds can drink at the same moment. One cup, so one bird drinks at a time. Neither number is a flock size. If you want longer between refills, the two pack doubles the water and gives the flock a second place to drink.
Why the water stays clean
With a trough or tray, chickens walk in it and climb on it, which means dirt, mud and droppings in the drinking water. Here the water sits in an opaque, closed container and only ever reaches the bird through the cup. Rinse the cups when you refill, rinse them under warm running water weekly, and give them a full clean every few months. Never boiling water, never the dishwasher. Keeping water clean helps reduce disease in the chicken coop.
How it is built
| Body | UV-treated ASA industrial thermoplastic — it does not go brittle or crack in the sun the way PVC does, and it keeps light off the water |
|---|---|
| Water contact | Lead-free and BPA-free. No glue, no adhesives, no chemicals |
| Cups | One genuine Lubing cup, made in Germany, with the Dine-A-Chook float upgrade |
| Filling | Top-filling in place, with a lockable lid and carry handle |
| Mounting | Built-in molded hooks on the back, plus a mounting kit |
The float is the part that does the work. It refills the cup automatically as the level drops, so the birds always find water at the same height instead of having to press anything. They do not need to learn a mechanism; chickens take to cups quickly. Watch the flock for the first few hours to make sure the smallest bird can reach the water.
Where to mount it
Mounting kit of steel brackets and screws for wood or metal. Mount it so the cups sit at eye level for your smallest bird. Always monitor for the first few hours so you can ensure the smallest bird in the flock can access the water in the cup; if not, lower it slightly. Put it in the shade if you can. Cool water is what the birds want on a hot afternoon, and the body blocks UV to help keep algae down. For a wire-mesh coop, contact us about the wire mesh mounting kit (sold separately) before you order.
One cup or two?
Same 1 gallon body, same fittings. One cup suits 6 to 8 hens. Depending on the size of your coop, consider two drinkers in different locations so birds have easy access. If several hens tend to want a drink at the same moment, or one of them guards the water, the twin-cup version gives a second drinking position from the same body. Two coops? The two pack gives you two waterers in one order.
