Tired of wasted feed, messy coops, and feeding wild birds instead of your flock?

If you’re losing feed to scratching, raking, weather, or a growing audience of sparrows and pigeons — the Dine-A-Chook Large Feeder is designed to stop it. Trusted by more than 80,000 chicken keepers, this is the most popular feeder in the range.

How does the Large Feeder work?

Easy to refill — just turn the handle on the lid to lift it off, pour in feed, and twist it back on. Feed gravity-feeds into a hooded base opening. The hood gives your hens room to eat comfortably, but the shape prevents the raking and flicking motion that scatters feed onto the ground. A built-in rain hood channels water away from the opening, so feed stays dry outdoors. No moving parts, no training — your chickens start eating within minutes.

What size flock is the Large Feeder for?

The 8 lb feeder suits flocks of around 6–8 hens. It holds about 8 lb (3.7 kg) of feed — about 5–7 days’ worth on quality complete pellets. That’s enough to leave your flock for a long weekend without worrying about feed. All Dine-A-Chook chicken feeders share the same waste-reducing design.

Smaller flock or tighter coop? The Small Chicken Feeder holds about 6 lb (2.6 kg) and suits flocks of up to 6 hens.

What’s in the box?

Feeder with twist-on lid, 2 steel mounting brackets, 4 self-tapping screws, and an installation guide. Mounts directly to wood — ready to install, no extra parts needed.

Mounting to wire mesh? Contact us about the stainless wire mesh mounting kit before you order.

What feed should I use with this feeder?

Works well with quality complete feed — crumble or pellets. These give your hens balanced nutrition in every bite and reduce selective eating. Grain mixes let hens pick their favorites and miss essential nutrients.

If the feed level looks low in the tray, that’s by design — it keeps feed away from edges so your hens can’t flick it out. Try the finger test: push your finger into the opening. If you can move the feed, your chickens can reach it.

Why is the Large Feeder built to last?

Every component is injection molded in Brisbane and assembled in Townsville — a genuine Australian made product, not just an Australian made sticker. UV-resistant ASA plastic handles sun and rain year after year. No moving parts means nothing to jam, seize, or break. Backed by a 3-year warranty, and shipped free to the USA with import duties prepaid.

Q. How many chickens will the Large Feeder suit?
A. The Large Feeder suits flocks of around 6–8 hens. It holds about 8 lb (3.7 kg) of quality complete feed, which lasts about 5–7 days for a typical backyard flock. If you have fewer birds or a smaller coop, the Small Feeder holds about 6 lb and suits flocks of up to 6.
Q. How does the Large Feeder reduce feed waste?
A. The hooded base opening stops chickens from flicking, raking, or billing feed onto the ground. There’s room for your hens to eat comfortably, but the shape prevents the scooping motion that scatters feed. A built-in rain hood channels water away from the feed opening, keeping feed dry outdoors.
Q. What height should I mount the Large Feeder?
A. Mount it so the bottom of the feeding opening aligns with the back of your chicken’s neck when she’s standing naturally. If you have mixed sizes in your flock, set the height for your smaller birds — the larger ones will adjust down. There’s no single fixed height because breeds and ages vary.
Q. Can I mount the Large Feeder on wire mesh?
A. Yes, with the stainless steel wire mesh mounting kit. Contact us about it before you order. The feeder comes with steel brackets and self-tapping screws designed for wood mounting. The stainless steel mesh kit provides a secure attachment to wire or mesh coops without damaging the mesh.
Q. What feed should I use with the Large Feeder?
A. Quality complete feed — crumble or pellets — gives your hens balanced nutrition in every bite and reduces selective eating. Grain mixes let hens pick their favorites and miss essential nutrients, so a quality complete feed is the better choice. If the feed level looks low in the tray, that’s by design — the finger test: if you can move the feed in the opening, your chickens can reach it.
Q. Will the Large Feeder stop rats?
A. The feeder is designed to reduce what attracts rodents, not to seal them out. By keeping feed contained and off the ground, it removes one of the main attractants for rodents. If you’re dealing with a persistent rodent problem, contact us and we will help you work through it.
Q. Is this a treadle feeder?
A. No. There is no step plate and nothing that moves. The feeder is gravity-fed with no moving parts: your hens eat directly from the hooded opening with no training needed. Most chickens are eating from it within minutes.
